Some common refrigerator problems
A lot of components keep a refrigerator running, cooling and defrosting. When your refrigerator isn’t working as it should, here are a few of the mostly likely reasons.
The refrigerator isn’t running
One of the simplest fixes if the refrigerator doesn’t run at all is the compressor start relay: in fact, a handy DIYer can replace it in about 15 minutes.
Some other part problems that could keep the refrigerator from running are the defrost timer, the electronic control board or the compressor.
The refrigerator isn’t cooling well or at all
If your refrigerator isn’t as cold as it should be, first make sure that nothing is blocking the airflow vents (the owner’s manual shows where the vents are).
If the vents are clear, the problem might be one of the parts that regulates the refrigerator temperature, like the thermostat or thermistor.
A problem with a major component — like the electronic control board or the compressor — could explain why the refrigerator isn’t cold.
Frost is building up in the freezer
If your refrigerator freezer looks like the Arctic, first look for a tear in the rubber gasket that seals the door. If you find one, you can replace the gasket yourself (tip: warm the new gasket with a blow dryer on low heat to relax the bends and creases the gasket picked up while in its package).
If the gasket is fine, likely causes are the defrost sensor, the defrost thermostat, the defrost thermistor, or the defrost control assembly.

Repair or replace?
In general, if the cost of the repair is less than half of the cost of a new appliance — or if the appliance is less than 5 years old — it’s usually more economical to repair it.
